Torrey Pines: Muni royalty resides in San Diego

Torrey Pines South

Few golf destinations evoke the same sense of grandeur as Torrey Pines, where the Pacific Ocean views on their two championship courses create an incredible sense of place for all to enjoy.

We are always excited to see the annual PGA TOUR stop here at the Farmers Insurance Open, and we are especially excited this year as it will be great to see Brooks Koepka back in action.

While we always enjoy this annual visit, Torrey Pines has also hosted arguably the most iconic major championship of all time when an injured Tiger Woods defeated Rocco Mediate in a playoff here in the 2008 U.S. Open on a broken leg showcasing a level of grit that will likely never be rivaled.  In 2021, the game’s best came back here for another U.S. Open and Jon Rahm took home his first major in another memorable battle where he outlasted Louis Oosthuizen.

There’s a reason why there are so many noteworthy finishes here as that final stretch of holes on the South Course are among the best in the country, and we’ve outlined how you can bring your crew here for a trip too.

A stay-and-play made easy

Part of Torrey’s charm is how accessible it is. Several resorts and hotels sit just minutes from the first tee, with a few of them giving out-of-town guests the ability to book some of their limited guaranteed tee time packages.  Many travel here thinking they can show up and find a time only to be disappointed that the tee sheet is full, so we highly recommend locking in one of these stay and play packages.

Because Torrey Pines is a municipal golf course owned and operated by the City of San Diego, local resident rates can be exceptionally good compared to typical resort pricing.  Non-resident tee times are limited, and they can be hard to secure on your own. A stay and play package takes the guesswork out of getting on the tee sheet and lets you focus on your golf trip instead of booking logistics.  Some ways to secure these limited guaranteed tee times are:

  • The Lodge at Torrey Pines – A quintessential choice for golf travelers. Steps from the South Course, The Lodge frequently features multi-night golf packages that include rounds on either the North or South Courses, and often by design hold priority tee time access during your stay.
  • Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines – Right alongside Torrey Pines, the Hilton offers dedicated stay-and-play golf packages that bundle hotel rooms and preferred access to tee times on both courses.  Also, it’s a great option for those with Hilton points stacked up.
  • San Diego Golf Reservations – With a unique relationship with the golf course, San Diego Golf Reservations has been booking tee times at Torrey Pines since 1992 and we’ve heard from multiple golfers that they are a breeze to work with.

Securing one of these coveted tee times can be a task, but it’s worth it as both the North and the South Courses provide the quintessential Southern California golf experience.

Two courses, one iconic setting

The North Course and the South Course share the same dramatic oceanfront canvas, but they paint two different experiences. The North is friendlier and more forgiving with generous landing areas and green complexes that invite aggressive lines for most golfers. It’s the round you circle for pure enjoyment, and the kind that ends with a camera roll full of coastal panoramas.

The South Course, on the other hand, is the heavyweight. A multi-time U.S. Open host, it proves why major championships and the PGA TOUR keep coming back. Holes stretch across the property in long, muscular corridors, demanding precise tee shots and strategic angles into greens that tilt, ripple, and shrug off careless approaches. The back nine provides a reminder that Torrey Pines rewards patience and punishes ego, and you will have to earn every par you write on the scorecard here.

What makes Torrey Pines special

Plenty of courses have ocean views; far fewer have a tournament pedigree this deep. The South Course’s ability to test the world’s best without losing its playability for everyday golfers is part of the mystique. Subtle elevation changes, strategic bunkering, and the ever-present marine layer create a layout that evolves with the weather. One day it’s soft and receptive, the next it’s firm and fast with winds that nudge shots toward canyons or carry them thrillingly toward distant fairways.

Layer in the accessibility that it is a municipal course with world-class credentials that can only be comparable to Bethpage Black, and you get a destination that feels both aspirational and attainable. It’s no wonder so many golfers rebook on the plane home, already plotting different lines on the same holes.

Recommendation

Torrey Pines sits in rare company.  It is a championship venue you can build an entire getaway around, and for the adventurous golfer we love suggesting a trio of visits with Rams Hill that is only a couple of hours away and a short trip up to Palm Springs to play PGA West and potentially over area favorites like Indian Wells.   You’ll come for the prestige, but you leave remembering the smell of the ocean, the late afternoon shadows crossing the greens, and the feeling that golf trips should always feel this easy…and this epic.
