The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island
It might have been one of the worst-kept secrets in professional golf, but nonetheless, it’s huge news for those on Kiawah Island, SC.
For the third time in 19 years, The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort will host the PGA Championship, with the 2031 rendition the next chance for the course to showcase its incredible chops to the world.
The past two PGA Championships held at the iconic South Carolina resort have been won by two of the game’s biggest stars — Rory McIlroy in 2012 and Phil Mickelson in 2021.
It is only the ninth course to host three or more PGA championships.
The PGA of America has been enamored with The Ocean Course, also choosing it as the host for the 1991 Ryder Cup. The U.S. won the battle, 14.5-13.5, to regain the cup.
The Ocean Course, highlighted by its mesmerizing views, offers something unique in the Northern Hemisphere — the only golf course to have 10 seaside golf holes, with the remaining eight running parallel to those.
Designed by Pete and Alice Dye, the course is ranked No. 25 in Golf Digest’s “Greatest U.S. Golf Courses.”
Well known for its unpredictable breezes, the course warns golfers that there could be as much as an “eight-club difference on holes depending upon the wind’s direction and strength.” The catch? You can’t predict which direction the wind will come from, as there are no prevailing winds at The Ocean Course.
