PGA National Resort: Revamping a Legend

PGA National's Champion Course

PGA National Resort has long been on golfer’s radars as one of the premier golfing destinations in the United States.  This long-time legendary property has been hosting the Honda Classic on the PGA Tour for several years now, and our team was able to capture this drone footage of the entire course to give you a preview before the best players in the world tee it up here.

While the Champion Course continues to be the star of the show at PGA National, the resort has done an incredible job of improving literally everything else around it to elevate the entire experience.  Here are a few of the changes that the resort has gone through in order to improve the property.

The Match

There’s nothing better than a heated match among friends on your golf getaway, and the team at PGA National has taken that concept to another level with the development of The Match.

Originally constructed as The Squire course by Tom and George Fazio in 1983, the resort tapped Andy Staples to reimagine the experience here along the same vein of the Ohooppee Match Club in Georgia making this only the second course designed in the States around the concept of match play.

The course is incredibly unique and features no par, is not rated, features a special set of “house rules,” and is set up to have stroke play being forbidden here…although nobody will be policing you on this so feel free to do so if your heart desires.

The Staple

In addition to The Match at PGA National, Staples and his team were able to also add a fun, new 9-hole short course design to the property known as The Staple.  This entertaining short course features holes that range from 60 to 130 yards, this course was designed so that you could play all the holes using only a putter if you so desired.

The Staple takes a more fun and relaxed approach to the short course model that has started to become more and more popular at top destinations such as The Cradle at Pinehurst, Bandon Preserve at Bandon Dunes and The Hay at Pebble Beach.  Created with the idea of “the hang” of the experience in mind, the course is configured like a figure-8 and you’ll have a crossing point between holes 2 to 3 and 7 to 8.  The course also features an outdoor bar and firepit to complete the experience, and it serves as the perfect way to cap off a day with your buddies on the course.

The Resort

These two new golf courses are only part of a $100 million renovation project that includes an entire facelift to the property.  As you enter the main lobby of the resort, you’ll find new interior and exterior designs as well as a complete overhaul of the guest rooms that bring a modern flair to the resort that you will notice immediately.  The redesign incorporates the South Florida vibe to create a new elevated level of luxury to your PGA National Experience.

This experience includes an array of new dining options including concepts from celebrity chefs Jeremy Ford and Lindsay Autry, a fully renovated 40,000 square-foot spa and a Kids Club to keep the younger guests entertained.

Even if you’ve had the pleasure of visiting this iconic Florida property before, you’ll feel like you’re visiting an entirely new property when you come here now.  It should be in every golfer’s consideration set when thinking about a visit to South Florida, and we hope you enjoy all the new amenities that PGA National Resort has to offer.
