Is Amelia Island one of the best golf destinations on the Atlantic Coast?

Oak Marsh Course

When searching for a golf getaway, if you’re anything like us, the thought of getting away to a destination that helps us put the worries of the world away for a few days and allows us to sink into the relaxing feel of our environment is at the top of our list of attributes that we are seeking.  When it comes to delivering that feeling in spades, Amelia Island is a destination that always comes to mind.

This Northeastern Florida oceanside sanctuary is located just south of the Florida/Georgia border and provides 13 miles of beaches, world-class dining, countless nature trails and waterways, world-class accommodations, and an incredible variety of golf in a relatively small footprint.

While there is so much to see and do here, we’ve highlighted a few of our favorite courses and resorts for you to enjoy in Amelia Island.

Omni Amelia Island Resort & Spa

As the de facto golf resort home in the area, the Omni Amelia Island Resort & Spa is home to 46 holes of golf including the recently renovated Oak Marsh Course.  As you’ll see in our exclusive drone footage, Beau Welling and his team absolutely nailed it on this Pete Dye-designed renovation as they kept the bones of the course intact while upgrading the infrastructure and adding in some character building elements like pops of fescue in the bunker to frame the course even better than it was before.

The other championship layout at the Omni Amelia Island is 18 holes on the highly coveted Long Point Course which is a private club that allows limited access to guests of the resort.  It features some incredible holes that play along both the ocean and the marsh, so if you can fit it into your experience here, we highly recommend it.

The resort is also home to a great short course called Little Sandy.  This 10-hole routing has some challenging shots with plenty of water to navigate your way around throughout the routing, and it’s a favorite of both skilled players and beginners alike.

When you combine the excellence of the golf here with the world-class accommodations available here, it serves as the perfect home for golf groups, couples, and families looking for a golf getaway alongside a myriad of additional amenities including 23 Har-Tru® tennis courts, a shopping village with multiple restaurants include Marche Burette (a personal favorite for breakfast and lunch), a full service spa, biking and hiking trails, and so much more.

The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island

If you’re looking for pure luxury when it comes to a trip in to Amelia Island, look no further than The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island.  As we’ve all come to expect from the Ritz-Carlton brand, this resort delivers a comfortably elegant setting for your Amelia Island getaway and golfers who stay here can enjoy access to their private golf course, The Golf Club of Amelia Island.  There are some wonderful holes on this course, and the conditions tend to be among the best in Northeast Florida.

Even if you don’t end up staying here, you can always book a dining experience at the AAA Five Diamond restaurant Salt or the more casual American dining experience at Coast based on availability.  This way you can peak behind the curtain of what the experience here offers, and we wouldn’t be surprised if you made this your Amelia Island home on one of your next trips here after doing so.

Additional golf in Amelia Island

While we’ve highlighted the two signature golf resort hubs here in Amelia Island, you definitely don’t want to miss Amelia River Club which provides a semi-private experience with a challenging layout. Add the Fernandina Beach Golf Club offers three 9-hole layouts and is a great public course ideal for refining your long game.

Another option to keep in mind is that you are only about an hour away from TPC Sawgrass here, so tacking on a round at one of the most famous destinations in golf may be a good fit on your golf travel itinerary.

Recommendation

Amelia Island is one of those rare places that we have traveled to countless times, and we are just as excited to go back time after time as the experience here always delivers.  From a golf perspective there are some great options, and we highly recommend making one of the two signature resorts the hub of your trip as the championship courses onsite at each are only available to be played if you are a resort guest.

The other thing we love about Amelia Island is that there isn’t a bad time of year to visit here.  Even in the summer, cool coastal breezes and the Northeastern Florida location tend to be not as hot as other parts of the state, and the mild winters are always a favorite especially for Northern guests.

Overall, you’ll be glad you made Amelia Island the home of your next golf getaway and we hope you fall in love with it the same way that we have over the years.
