As the calendar turns to spring and summer, the Northeast completes its thaw and its golf courses begin to green up and become lush, our attention is piqued, and our game is ready for a trip to the sublime Turning Stone Resort/Casino in central New York. It’s become somewhat of a tradition for us to make the journey to the Oneida Nation’s opulent, friendly, and consistently on-point destination and its bucket-list courses.
Casino golf: Oklahoma’s WinStar has two outstanding tracks
WinStar, owned and operated by the Chickasaw Nation of Oklahoma, is in Thackerville, about 80 miles from the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. Both courses here – Redbud and Scissortail – were designed by D.A. Weibring and Steve Wolford. Between the two courses, there are some 20 acres of ponds and 54 acres of native area, including 13 acres that have been planted with milkweed in order to assist the Monarch butterfly, which makes heavy migration south through that area in the fall.
Coeur d’Alene is one part floating green, one part masterpiece
If you’ve heard of Coeur d’Alene Golf Course in northern Idaho, you probably know about its most famous feature – the floating island green on the par-3 14th hole. It’s memorable, of course. It’s unique. It’s even adjustable. But while it’s the drawing card to this fabulous Pacific Northwest course, it’s just one part of a winning hand. The Travel Caddie loves the course and has plenty of insight into a trip to Idaho.
