Known as the centerpiece of the Pinehurst Resort, No. 2 first opened in 1907, designed by the incredible Donald Ross — who once called it “the fairest test of championship golf I have ever designed.” And it has been living up to that billing ever since, with Ross spending the next 40-plus years improving the course constantly until his death in 1948. It has since been restored by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw in 2010, who reintroduced hardpan, natural bunker edges and native wire grasses. Pinehurst No. 2 provides the United States’ stiffest test of golf, hosting both the U.S. Open and U.S. Women’s Open.
