PGA Championship 2021 preview: What’s new at Kiawah Island Golf Resort

It’s finally here. The 2021 PGA Championship is taking place at the iconic Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort May 20-23, and the world’s best will be put to the test at one of Pete Dye’s greatest creations.

The Ocean Course is known for its championship pedigree, as it first hit the world stage at the iconic 1991 Ryder Cup known as the “War by the Shore” that came down to the final putt to bring the Cup back to American soil.  For an incredible history lesson, watch this:

The next time the course took the main stage was during the 2012 PGA Championship where a young Rory McIlroy looked like he was playing a different course that week, sailing to an 8-shot victory over his nearest competitor.  Obviously, Rory had missed the memo that he was playing one of the most beautiful yet challenging courses in the United States!  For a look at his dominant victory, watch this:

As the best players in the world now descend upon the Ocean Course for the PGA Championship, it will be interesting to see how the players contend with the course during the new May dates, with the PGA Championship a former staple of the August schedule. Weather during this time of the year tends to be about 10 degrees cooler on average, but no matter what time of year it is you better believe that those Atlantic Ocean breezes will be in full effect for all to contend with.

If you’re anything like us, watching this week will have you plotting your next visit to Kiawah Island Golf Resort and we couldn’t recommend it more highly.  To see a full breakdown of what the Kiawah experience is all about, check out our extensive Trip Ideas breakdown:
