Golf Mesquite: The other side of hitting the links in Nevada

Wolf Creek Golf Club

If you’re looking to enjoy a little gambling, some great restaurants and stellar golf, Las Vegas, of course, comes to mind.

It’s one of our favorite golf markets, and we’ve provided a breakdown of our favorites in this market here for you.

But if you’re looking to slide outside of the Strip for a day or two and see some of the other golf Las Vegas has to offer, look no further than the Mesquite area.

Think of it maybe as a little more laid-back, light version of Vegas. Mesquite, once a Mormon farming community, certainly doesn’t take a back seat in terms of golf. The casinos, hotels and restaurants will impress as well. And you can get some great rates on courses or golf packages.

Oh, and by the way, Mesquite is home of the Professional Long Drivers Association’s World Championships. It’s been conducted there (currently at the Mesquite Sports and Events Complex in late September) for a few decades, so what better place to get a little inspiration for teeing it high and letting it fly. In the desert, that’s a great strategy, as long as you can rein it in when you get to the greens. And Mesquite is a great place to do just that.

Even folks who are just looking to schedule a Las Vegas golf vacation often take a day to venture over to Mesquite, which is located next to the Arizona and Utah borders, for a round or two. It’s that good and easy to reach from Vegas.

Getting here is quite easy as you’ll still probably look to fly into Vegas’ McCarran International Airport. But from there, just rent a car and head northeast to Mesquite 80 miles away and relax.

Unforgettable courses

No matter where you stay in Mesquite, there’s a course within 10 minutes.

One of Mesquite’s most talked about, and beautiful layouts is Wolf Creek Golf Club, which opened in 2000 and cemented Mesquite as a great golf destination. Elevated tees and greens and too many views through the canyons to document on your phone, Wolf Creek Golf Club, which plays around 7,000 yards from the tips, is a visual feast. The emerald green of the fairways and greens against the white sand bunkers and tan, rocky, rugged terrain surrounding the holes is as good as it gets. The course design is credited to Dennis Rider, one of course’s original principal owners, but don’t let the lack of a big-name golf course architect here fool you; Wolf Creek is highly regarded, ranked among the greatest 100 public courses in America by Golf Digest and as high as second in the state, just behind Shadow Creek Golf Club, the exclusive Vegas course designed by Tom Fazio.

Conestoga Golf Club is another great choice in Mesquite. It’s not quite as dramatic as Wolf Creek, but the contrast between the landforms and green grass of the fairways and putting surfaces as they wind their way through the canyons is striking as well. Located in the Del Webb senior community of Sun City Mesquite, the course has elevation change, a few lakes and streams and plenty of large, beautifully sculpted bunkers. Designed by Gary Panks, the layout has five sets of tees, playing nearly 7,300 yards from the tips.

Oasis Golf Club offers 36 holes of terrific championship golf. The Palmer Course (formerly known as the Oasis Golf Course), is, of course, an Arnold Palmer (and Ed Seay) design. This one also features incredible vistas as the rugged fairways wind through the rocky hillsides. This is where much of the Golf Channel’s “Big Break Mesquite” was filmed. Not particularly long at just under 6,500 yards from the tips, it is long on enjoyment with five sets of tees suitable for all levels of players.

The other course at Oasis is the Canyons Course, which opened in 2005, 10 years after the Palmer Course. It, too, is a par 71, which plays around 6,400 yards. It has two distinct nines. The front nine was designed by David Druzisky, while the back nine, crafted by Palmer, is a little more exacting with narrow fairways.

Another fun golf course is Falcon Ridge. Sticking to the common theme here, Falcon Ridge also features beautiful landscapes with elevation change, water features and high mesa views to go with a 6,550-yard par-71 layout designed by Kelby Hughes and Cresent Hardy. It’s a very playable layout with a couple of blind shots that requires a little course management, but most of all it’s simply enjoyable.

CasaBlanca Golf Club, which was designed by Cal Olson, is another good option. Located at the CasaBlanca casino resort, the course is situated in the valley of the Virgin River Mountains. It’s a 7,000-yard links-style course with four tee options.

One course you’ll definitely want to consider during your visit is Coyote Springs Golf Club. It’s about 45 minutes from Mesquite and just under an hour from Las Vegas, but well worth the drive. Considered one of Jack Nicklaus’ best, it is also listed among Golf Digest’s greatest 100 public golf courses. At nearly 7,500 yards from the back tees, it’s as much as you want to bite off if you slide back to the tips here. With five sets of tees starting at just over 5,300 yards, golfers of all levels can play it, though. The Nicklaus signature layout features 11 lakes, huge bunkers both in the fairways and around the large greens and incredible views of three mountain ranges surrounding the course.

Package opportunities

While the casino resorts aren’t as large as they are on the Las Vegas Strip, they are certainly more convenient and offer plenty of great rooms, entertainment, dining and gaming. They are also easily paired with golf (check out GolfMesquiteNevada.com, for example).

One option is the 60-acre Eureka Casino Resort, which features newly remodeled rooms and suites as well as a resort pool, complete with cabanas in a lush, tropical setting. The restaurants at the resort are also top notch, including Gregory’s Steak and Spirits, winner of TripAdvisor’s Travelers’ Choice Award in 2021. And, of course, you’ll find all kinds of gambling options with plenty of slots, poker machines, table games and the new William Hills Sportsbook, which is a fantastic spot not only to place a parlay, but to check out all the games on the dozens of big screens available.

Rising Star Sports Ranch is another great lodging choice. Designed for groups, it has 210 guest rooms and suites as well as one of the coolest amenities you’ll find at a resort. It’s called The Backyard, a park-like recreation center with a pool, basketball courses, horseshoe pits, pickleball courts and a putting green.

Packages can also be paired with regular hotels, too, like the Holiday Inn Express & Suites, which means there are options for every budget.

Recommendation

We love sneaking in a day or two at this Nevada golf oasis as part of a Las Vegas golf getaway if your schedule permits. It’s a low-key, low stress way to enjoy great golf, a little gaming and some great restaurants, both at the resorts and away from the hotels.

It’s a great alternative to the hustle and bustle of the Vegas strip for those who are looking for a more relaxing vibe during their getaway.  The golf courses in Mesquite are always in good shape, never lacking for views or imagination, and quite reasonable considering the quality of the experience.
